Postmenopausal women. Oestrogen supports calcium retention in bone. After menopause, oestrogen falls and calcium loss from bone accelerates significantly. The requirement increases to 1,200mg per day. This group has the highest documented risk of calcium-related bone loss and the strongest evidence for supplementation benefit.
People who avoid dairy without replacing it. Dairy is the most calcium-dense common food. People who remove it without consistently replacing it through fortified plant milks, leafy greens, almonds, canned fish with bones, or tofu are at high risk of falling below adequate intake.
